The Greenville News - Greenville, South Carolina

The Greenville News - Aug. 23

Every band wants its music exposed to potential fans, of course. The more far-flung, the better. But for Greenville blues-rock trio Paradise Blue, those fans are flung a little farther than you might expect. Thanks to the magic of the Internet, radio listeners in Germany, Croatia and Denmark are grooving to tunes recorded in the Upstate.
It all began when Paradise Blue's manager Randy Sellet hooked up with a national music promoter, who listed the band on several music Web sites. After checking out the band online, a disc jockey from Vinkovci, Croatia, e-mailed Sellet to ask for a couple of CDs.
Sellet sent him, via old-fangled snail mail, three of the band's four CDs, including the latest, "Relentless," recorded at Crystal Rain Studios in Travelers Rest and released in April.
"He immediately played them on his very next show, he worked them right in, played four songs in a row," Sellet said.
The Croatian DJ passed along the band's information to radio friends in Germany and Denmark, who also requested Paradise Blue CDs to play on their shows.
Paradise Blue also is featured on a blues disc jockey group on Yahoo!, and through that, their manager hopes to spark an interest in the band at even more radio stations, including a number of them in Australia. If international listeners become Paradise Blue fans, they don't have to beg their local record store to order copies of "Relentless." It's available online.
Not bad for a band that usually finds its audiences in the bars and clubs around Greenville and Myrtle Beach. Although Paradise Blue has hit the stage at Freedom Weekend Aloft and RiverPlace Festival, and is set to perform at Fall for Greenville, the three members are still waiting for that big break.

The performers are no strangers to the local music scene. Lead singer Doug Mullinax, who produces many local bands, played with the band Vision, which opened for 38 Special and Joan Jett. Charles Moses, the bass player, is a veteran of Upstate bands such as the Power Tools and Sky Dancer. He also played in Aaron Tippin's band for a time. Drummer Russ Lofland, is a Louisiana native who earned his chops playing in bands around Shreveport. Although band members still have their day jobs, they would happily shift gears if the right opportunity came along for Paradise Blue, Sellet said.
They're understandably excited about this international exposure, Moses said.
In many cases, he said, it can be easier for a band to break through on European radio stations, which have less firmly defined playlists than American stations, many of which are owned by media conglomerates.
"Europe's not quite as rigid about things like that; they're more likely to play original music by bands that are not necessarily well-known," Moses said.
Closer to home, Paradise Blue has enjoyed airplay on radio stations in Greenville and Columbia. Still, the band hasn't created a stir on the national scene. But then, that's the case with many bands. Groups such as Monster Magnet, Cheap Trick, and Blondie, built followings in Europe, Japan, and Australia, respectively, before moving on to conquer America.
Already, the Internet exposure has given Paradise Blue a glimpse of new horizons; the trio is looking into an offer for an overseas tour, Moses said.
The international airplay is "really nice; hopefully, it's going to lead to some other things," Moses said. "You never know how far something's going to go."

Feb. 23 - The Greenville News / Time Out Section:

BEST LOCAL R&B BAND
Paradise Blue

People can't seem to get enough of electric blues and rock music. It's soulful and eclectic, yet straightforward and tough. Paradise Blue is a consistent draw on the rockin' blues scene, playing a number of bars regularly in the Upstate, and their repeat position as most popular among our readers is evidence of their popularity in the region.

Upstate's own Paradise Blue continues to gain momentum
with their rockin' style of R & B

by Dan Armonaitis
For the past couple of years, Upstate music veterans Doug Mullinax, Charles Moses, and Russ Lofland have been performing under the name Paradise Blue. Having already released two albums (a full-length and an EP), the band has recently become a staple at local clubs, delivering a rockin' style of rhythm & blues.
Paradise Blue's latest effort is an EP entitled Sleepless Nights, which is the first record to feature the band's current lineup exclusively. Lofland, who plays drums, didn't join the band until the latter stages of Paradise Blue's debut Labour of Love and appeared on just two of that album's tracks.
"We like the first one, but this one I think is stronger", bassist Moses says. "It's just recorded better and I think it's more consistent overall. And then I think the fact that Russ had been playing with us for awhile and had a chance to getsettled in with the band had something to do with it, too".
Mullinax, the band's guitarist and lead vocalist and proprietor of Crystal Rain Studios in Travelers Rest, produced the record. Although Mullinax says he's satisfied with the record, he's more into looking towards the future than reflecting on the past.
"I'm proud of it, but then again I'm ready to move on to something new.  And I think that's probably true with any artist."
Something new for Mullinax would be Paradise Blue's next record, which he says is already in planning.
"Our next album is going to be real high-energy", Mullinax says. "It's going to have a little bit more rock n' roll in it but it's still going to stay in the blues territory. We've been doing so well playing bluesy, jazz, type music and it's what is in my heart, so that's what I want to stay with".A high-energy next record may come closer to capturing Paradise Blue's live sound, which they say is quite different than what comes across on their previous recordings.
"I think we sound a little different live than we do on CD", Moses says.  We're probably a little
more raw live and a little bit more rocking than actually comes across on CD for some
reason.
I think there's a lot of energy in the CD, but it comes across a little more laid back than we actually are live."
"We're a different band live than we are on tape", Mullinax agrees. "On our CD, we're more subtle.
Live, we're a lot more hyped up, not as in loud, just more energetic".
For Paradise Blue the goal is to keep playing the music they enjoy creating, and get a record label deal.
"It's one of those things where if it happens that's great but if it doesn't, we'll just carry it on the best we can", Moses says. "I've learned over the years that you don't hold your breath on that. It would be great, but you can't really say that it's going to happen. But we're working as hard as we can right now to try to make things happen".
"I play music for fun", Mullinax says. "My attitude is that if we go somewhere with this, that's fine. But if we don't I'm still going to play and I'm still going to please people and I'm going to please myself. And that's what matters. I'm not going to quit. I enjoy it too much".

Song Reviews:

What's Come Over Me

You gotta enjoy this one ... Sweet .......... fine understated guitar work that melds with the vocals to make a gorgeous vision of you standing on a stage working that guitar with SRV confidence. You obviously have nothing to prove. I will look for more of your work. Thanks a heap for the listen. Good luck.
OldGuy - Mississauga, Ontario, Canada

Some Kind Of Loving
MMMM...Blues. This song has some kick ass blues playing that gets my head bobbin and my foot tappin (the most assured sign of a pleased listener). The singer is assured of his blues presence and is helped along with solid fretwork that grooves and moves with tight stop start playing. Bass and drum just keep it together and all provide a dependable blues riff that dig into what is truly rock and roll.
keeb110 -Wilsonville, Oregon

rachael4 -Toronto, Ontario, Canada
This is a great track but it seems like it would to me be a great rock and roll and not blues or maybe both. It is fun and moving. Special Award: Most Rocking Track
johnnyguitarroc -Watsonville, California
Nice turnaround. I like the movements between the verses. Pushes the envelope. While I am not a blues purist, I think that you've kept the idiom intact and added something a little fresh and your own to it.
BarrenIslands -Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada
Balls out Blues. Classic blues licks, and solid rhythm section. A song you can groove to again and again without tiring of it. Nice sound production, particulary the guitar sound, but the overall mix sound good. -tbirdwilson from Atlanta, Georgia

Creative Blues Phrasing - Hot Guitars.  Great tune with some creative phrasing and a hot guitar riff that jumps out of the mix. The wha pedal adds a nice touch to the overall sound of this one. Good performance by the vocalist and a tight bass/drum rhythm section.

Ltrain -Nashville, Tennessee
Rock on-classic track here. Great captivating intro. Rockin guitar. Decent Vocals. So far sounds like an awesome bar band. Good riff, I am getting into this. One of the more refreshing tracks I have heard on here in awhile.
MrClitta -Burlington, Ontario
Texas bar blues band. Sounds like a good meat and potatoes blues bar band from Austin or something. Nice guitar tone. Good groove.

Strat?? Love that strat sound....cool tune and nice guitar work. Cool breaks also.
oothebluegplyer from Milford, CT
Rock and Blues mixed, at it's Best. The guitars are awesome in this song
JAguitar33 -Ishpeming, Michigan
Zowie!! Wow, I really liked the intensity of this tune. Guitars entirely rule this track -- great musicianship. I also enjoyed the vocals, although I thought they were a bit too low in the mix (could be my speakers though). Otherwise, I totally enjoyed this song; gets you going with a great dose of blues/rock. Have Fun & Rock On!!
Ave1983 -Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada
Slidin' through the blues. Song kicks into gear right from the start. I like the helter-skelter drum style. The guitar had the sliding hints of Johnny Winter influences. The lyrics got a bit redundant, but the vocals were decent enough to not cause one to focus on them, at least on 1st listening.
frank3z -Mableton, Georgia
Rock and Blues mixed, at it's Best. The guitars are awesome in this song
JAguitar33 - Ishpeming, Michigan
Strat??. Love that strat sound....cool tune and nice guitar work. Cool breaks also.
oothebluegplyer - Milford, Connecticut
It Moves. Good rockin',upbeat tune. Nice tight band. Liked the vocals.
1_bassman - Largo, Florida
Cool song that kept my toes tapping. Fantastic rhythm tracks. Great song. Nice, sparse use of the lead guitar. Most lead guitarists go way overboard. This guy doesn't. Gives me exactly what I need. Also, wonderful horn track.
